Accountability for School Performance

Umlambo Foundation (Umlambo) and Link Community Development Malawi (LCDM) intend to undertake a pilot project in Salima District in Malawi focussing on synergising the various school accountability and school performance methods and approaches currently being rolled out in the country. This project will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Department of Inspectorate and Advisory Services (DIAS). The overall aim of the project is to improve the access to and availability of quality education for all children by enhancing the sustainability and effectiveness of school and district evaluation, planning and school improvement processes, and through greater synergy with national inspection and advisory services.. The project seek to achieve this by developing a systematic school performance and accountability mechanism that can be managed and run (a) at school level, allowing for effective community participation in the preparation and delivery of school improvement plans; (b) at district level, for improved performance and effective implementation of school and district improvement plans; and (c) at national level, to inform and develop a coherent system of school inspection. Umlambo Foundation was founded in 2008 and its main focus is to facilitate leadership and management development of school principals to improve the quality of education in public schools. Its vision is that of People winning against poverty through education: One school at a time for every child in every family. Link Community Development works with communities, schools and governments – to identify and remove the obstacles to quality education by providing district education authorities and schools with the tools, training and support to understand how schools are performing, measure performance and to plan for improvement.
