Rhodes University Sol Plaatje Institute

Rhodes University’s Sol Plaatje Institute (SPI) for Media Leadership is an associate institute of the University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies. Established in 2002, the SPI’s core mandate is to educate and train both practising and emerging media managers and leaders from and for Africa. Since its launch, more than 2,500 practising media leaders from across Africa have been trained by the SPI through its professional business and editorial short courses, and nearly 200 postgraduate students have graduated with an honours degree-level formal qualification in media management. This qualification, known as Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management (PGDip in Media Management or the PDMM, as the course is popularly known), is the only formal qualification in media management in Africa and the developing world.
