The conference brought together over 50 participants representing academia, civil society organisations, and representatives of regional economic communities. What emerged during the two-day discussions was that there is a huge leadership deficit in the region as a key enabler for a democratic developmental state.

From 23-27 April 2012, the Fifth Ordinary Session of the Conference of Ministers of Education of the African Union (COMEDAF III) will take place in Abuja to continue the debate on the implementation of the African Union’s Action Plan for the Second Decade of Education (2006-2015).

It is increasingly recognized that young people are central to issues of crime and violence, in particular. Research shows that young people suffer much higher levels of victimization than adults. They are also often the perpetrators of violence against other youth and the population as whole. The issue of violence against and by youth is receiving growing attention in the media, and it is increasingly acknowledged that there will be a grave cost to country governments and to society if youth issues are not addressed.

The Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities (SADPD) in collaboration with the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the Swaziland government Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) is organising a conference on education for children with disabilities with the theme “The Rights of Children with Disabilities: The Duty to Protect, Respect, Promote and fulfil the right to Education for Children With Disabilities”.

The Media and ICTs Programme and the Frederich Ebert Stiftung (fesmedia Africa) are jointly supporting MISA Regional to host a conference on Media and Elections in southern Africa. The conference, which takes place on 26 & 27 September 2012 at St George Hotel in Pretoria, is aimed at developing guidelines for election coverage in the SADC region which would be adopted by media houses across the region.

A major conference will take place in Maputo, Mozambique from 3-5 December, 2012, entitled ‘Critical Reflections on Community Radio in Africa’. Funded by OSISA, the conference involves a host of key organisations including FORCOM, AMARC, IBIS, PANOS and the Commonwealth of Learning.
