Mining has been practiced in West Africa since the earliest times and small-scale mining of gold and iron has been the basis of wealth and/or power of many empires and kingdoms in the region throughout history.

OSISA, the Heinrich Böll Stiftung and Natural Justice are organizing a Policy Dialogue to further develop the strategies identified in the Green Economy Dialogue hosted by OSISA in 2012.

The objective of the Dialogue is to:

Consider practical experiences from across Africa on diversifying rural economies, localizing development and increasing sustainable production to aid in the formulation of policy positions that inherently reflect African needs and interests as input for the global green development agenda.

Of particular importance is Section 62 (1) and (2) of the Constitution which for the first time, establishes the human right of access to information.
